This purple candle represents hope, drawing attention to the prophecies of the Old Testament that foretold the coming of Christ. It is lit on the first Sunday of Advent, signifying anticipation and the beginning of Advent.
"Bethlehem Candle"
This purple candle represents peace. It recalls the preparations made for the coming of Christ and the peace that He brings, aligning with the theme of Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. It is lit on the second Sunday of Advent.
"Shepherd’s Candle"
This candle is typically pink and represents joy—the joy of Christ's arrival and the announcement of His birth to the shepherds. It is lit on the third Sunday, known as Gaudete Sunday (Latin for "Rejoice"), marking a joyful pause in Advent’s reflective themes.
"Angel’s Candle"
This purple candle represents love. It is lit on the fourth Sunday of Advent and recalls the love of God made manifest through Jesus’ incarnation. This candle can also symbolize the message of the angels: "Peace on earth, goodwill toward men."
"Christ Candle"
The white candle is lit on Christmas Morning and represents the purity, holiness, and light of Jesus, symbolizing that Christ has come to bring light to a dark world. Time to sing "Happy Birthday" to Jesus!
The Jesse Tree is an especially meaningful part of the Advent calendar. It takes the readers on a journey through the story of scripture from creation to the incarnation. Each day, there is a symbol and an assigned reading. The tradition is based on a passage from the Book of Isaiah (Isaiah 11:1), which states, "A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit." This tradition reminds us how long Israel waited for the Messiah and how God works in unusual and unexpected people. This tradition includes displaying ornaments that accumulate over Advent to Christmas morning and easily remind us of the coming of our Immanuel, God with us.
